STROKE. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in a Multimodal Approach Heavily Weighted Toward Mechanical Thrombectomy With Solitaire Stent in Acute Stroke

Woong Yoon, MD, PhD; Min Young Jung, MD; Se Hee Jung, MD; Man Seok Park, MD; Joon Tae Kim, MD; Heoung Keun Kang, MD, PhD

Background and Purpose—Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may appear on computerized tomography scans after mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke. The incidence and prognosis of this observation remain unknown. We investigated the frequency and clinical consequences of SAH after treating acute ischemic stroke with a multimodal approach heavily weighted toward mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Combined use of percutaneous cryoablation and vertebroplasty with 3D rotational angiograph in treatment of single vertebral metastasis: comparison with vertebroplasty

S. Masala, M. Chiocchi, A. Taglieri, A. Bindi, M. Nezzo, D. De Vivo, G. Simonetti

Introduction: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of combined procedure of cryoablation and vertebroplasty (CVT) for reduction of pain and improvement of the quality of life in patients with single painful metastatic vertebral fractures.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Technical Feasibility and Application of Mechanical Thrombectomy with the Solitaire FR Revascularization Device in Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion

P. Mordasini, C. Brekenfeld, J.V. Byrne, U. Fischer, M. Arnold, M.R. Heldner, R. Lüdi, H.P. Mattle, G. Schroth and J. Gralla

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute BAO is a devastating neurological condition associated with a poor clinical outcome and a high mortality rate. Recanalization has been identified as a major prognostic factor for good outcome in BAO. Mechanical thrombectomy using retrievable stents is an emerging treatment option for acute stroke. First clinical trials using stent retrievers have shown promising high recanalization rates. However, these studies mainly included large artery occlusions in the anterior circulation with only a few or single cases of BAO. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate technical feasibility, safety, and efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy using retrievable stent in the treatment of acute BAO.

STROKE. Clipping Versus Coiling for Ruptured Intracranial Aneurysms. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Hui Li, MD*; Rui Pan, MD*; Hongxuan Wang, MD; Xiaoming Rong, MD; Zi Yin, MD; Daniel P. Milgrom, MD; Xiaolei Shi, MD; Yamei Tang, MD, PhD*; Ying Peng, MD, PhD*

Background and Purpose—Endovascular treatment has increasingly been used for aneurismal subarachnoid aneurismal hemorrhage. The aim of this analysis is to assess the current evidence regarding safety and efficiency of clipping compared with coiling.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Long-term clinical and radiological results of endovascular internal trapping in vertebral artery dissection

Daina Kashiwazaki, Satoshi Ushikoshi, Takeshi Asano, Satoshi Kuroda, Kiyohiro Houkin

Introduction: Previous reports have suggested that endovascular parent artery occlusion is an effective and safe procedure for the treatment of vertebral artery dissection (VAD). However, the results of long-term outcomes are still unclear. This study reviewed the clinical and imaging outcomes of patients with VAD treated by endovascular internal trapping.

JOURNAL OF VASCULAR SURGERY. Cognitive outcome differences on the side of carotid artery stenting

Hideyuki Ishihara, MD, PhD, Fumiaki Oka, MD, PhD, Satoshi Shirao, MD, Shoichi Kato, MD, PhD, Hirokazu Sadahiro, MD, Masami Osaki, BA, Michiyasu Suzuki, MD, PhD

Objective: The right and left sides of the brain play different roles in cognition. Therefore, the side of treatment should be taken into consideration when evaluating cognitive outcome following revascularization. Thus, we designed a study to evaluate changes in right hemisphere cognitive function in patients undergoing right carotid artery stentings (CAS) and left hemispheric cognitive function in patients undergoing left CAS. In addition, we studied CAS-related changes in regional cerebral blood flow to determine potential correlations with changes in cognitive function.

STROKE. Characteristics of Ischemic Brain Lesions After Stenting or Endarterectomy for Symptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis. Results From the International Carotid Stenting Study–Magnetic Resonance Imaging Substudy

Henrik Gensicke, MD; Thomas Zumbrunn, PhD; Lisa M. Jongen, MD; Paul J. Nederkoorn, MD; Sumaira Macdonald, FRCR; Peter A. Gaines, FRCR; Philippe A. Lyrer, MD; Stephan G. Wetzel, MD; Aad van der Lugt, MD; Willem P. Th. M. Mali, MD; Martin M. Brown, MD; H. Bart van der Worp, MD; Stefan T. Engelter, MD; Leo H. Bonati, MD; on behalf of the ICSS-MRI Substudy Investigators

Background and Purpose—In a substudy of the International Carotid Stenting Study (ICSS), more patients had new ischemic brain lesions on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after stenting (CAS) than after endarterectomy (CEA). In the present analysis, we compared characteristics of diffusion-weighted MRI lesions.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Peri-stent aneurysm formation following a stent implant for stenotic intracranial vertebral artery dissection: a technical report of two cases successfully treated with coil embolization

Hideki Ishimaru, Kazuaki Nakashima, Hideaki Takahata, Yohjiro Matsuoka

Introduction: Although stenting for stenotic vertebral artery dissection (VAD) improves compromised blood flow, subsequent peri-stent aneurysm (PSA) formation is not well-known. We report two cases with PSA successfully treated with coil embolization.

JOURNAL OF VASCULAR SURGERY. Assessing the impact of distal protection filter design characteristics on 30-day outcomes of carotid artery stenting procedures

Natasha A. Loghmanpour, MS, Gail M. Siewiorek, PhD, Kelly M. Wanamaker, MD, Satish C. Muluk, MD, Rabih Chaer, MD, Mark H. Wholey, MD, Ender A. Finol, PhD

Objective: This study aims to review retrospectively the records of patients treated with carotid artery stenting (CAS) to investigate the potential correlations between clinical variables, distal protection filter (DPF) type and characteristics, and 30-day peri-/postprocedural outcomes.
