ABSTRACT

THE LANCET NEUROLOGY. Effect of thrombolysis with alteplase within 6 h of acute ischaemic stroke on long-term outcomes (the third International Stroke Trial [IST-3]): 18-month follow-up of a randomised controlled trial

20130715

Background: ew data are available from randomised trials about the effect of thrombolysis with alteplase on long-term functional outcome in patients who have had acute ischaemic stroke and no trial has reported effects on health-related quality of life. A secondary objective of the third International Stroke Trial (IST-3) was to assess the effect of thrombolysis on such outcomes at 18 months.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Outcome of mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent as first-line intra-arterial treatment in intracranial internal carotid artery occlusion

Yeon Hong Yoon, Woong Yoon, Min Young Jung, Nam Yeol Yim, Byeong Chae Kim, Heoung Keun Kang

Introduction: Acute stroke from occlusion of the intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) is associated with a poor clinical outcome despite a thrombolytic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of mechanical thrombectomy using the Solitaire stent for the treatment of acute stroke patients with intracranial ICA occlusion.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Does Preinterventional Flat-Panel Computer Tomography Pooled Blood Volume Mapping Predict Final Infarct Volume After Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Cerebral Artery Occlusion?

Marlies Wagner, Yiannis Kyriakou, Richard du Mesnil de Rochemont, Oliver C. Singer, Joachim Berkefeld

Purpose: Decreased cerebral blood volume is known to be a predictor for final infarct volume in acute cerebral artery occlusion. To evaluate the predictability of final infarct volume in patients with acute occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) or the distal internal carotid artery (ICA) and successful endovascular recanalization, pooled blood volume (PBV) was measured using flat-panel detector computed tomography (FPD CT).

NEURORADIOLOGY. Carotid and vertebral artery sacrifice with a combination of Onyx and coils: technical note and case series

Nohra Chalouhi, Robert M. Starke, Stavropoula I. Tjoumakaris, Pascal M. Jabbour, L. Fernando Gonzalez, David Hasan, Robert H. Rosenwasser, Aaron S. Dumont

Introduction: Permanent vessel sacrifice has become a routine for the management of aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms, tumors, and carotid blowouts. The purpose of this study is to describe a new technique for carotid and vertebral artery sacrifice using a combination of Onyx and coils and to assess its feasibility, safety, and efficacy.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Stent-assisted coil embolization of wide-necked posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysms

Young Dae Cho, Hyun-Seung Kang, Woong Jae Lee, Kang Min Kim, Jeong Eun Kim, Moon Hee Han

Introduction: Endovascular coil embolization of posterior circulation aneurysms has advantages over a surgical approach. However, the application of coil embolization is sometimes limited in wide-necked posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms, which are incorporating the origin of the branch. Presented here is a series of patients who were subjected to stent-supported coil embolization of PICA aneurysms.

NEUROSURGERY. A New, More Accurate Classification of Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysms: Computed Tomography Angiographic Study of 1009 Consecutive Cases With 1309 Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysms

Elsharkawy, Ahmed MD; Lehečka, Martin MD, PHD; Niemelä, Mika MD, PhD; Billon-Grand, Romain MD; Lehto, Hanna MD; Kivisaari, Riku MD, PhD; Hernesniemi, Juha MD, PhD

BACKGROUND: Classification of middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms is sometimes difficult because the identification of the main MCA bifurcation, the key for accurate classification of MCA aneurysms, is inconsistent and somewhat subjective.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Predictive factors of outcome and hemorrhage after acute ischemic stroke treated by mechanical thrombectomy with a stent-retriever

Sébastien Soize, Coralie Barbe, Krzysztof Kadziolka, Laurent Estrade, Isabelle Serre, Laurent Pierot

Introduction: The study attempts to identify notable factors predicting poor outcome, death, and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing mechanical thrombectomy with stent retriever. These data could be useful to improve the selection of patients for thrombectomy.

NEUROSURGERY. Endovascular WEB Flow Disruption in Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysms: Preliminary Feasibility, Clinical, and Anatomical Results in a Multicenter Study

Pierot, Laurent MD, PhD; Klisch, Joachim MD, PhD; Cognard, Christophe MD, PhD; Szikora, Istvan MD, PhD; Mine, Benjamin MD; Kadziolka, Krzysztof MD; Sychra, Vojtech MD; Gubucz, Istvan MD; Januel, Anne-Christine MD; Lubicz, Boris MD, PhD

BACKGROUND: The endovascular treatment of middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms with unfavorable anatomy (wide neck, unfavorable morphology) is frequently challenging. Flow disruption with the WEB is a potentially interesting endovascular treatment for this type of aneurysm.

CIRCULATION. Peripheral Artery Disease Risk Factors for Cerebral Embolization After Carotid Artery Stenting With Embolic Protection. A Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study in 837 Consecutive Patients

Klaudija Bijuklic, MD, Andreas Wandler, MD, Yuriy Varnakov, MD, Thilo Tuebler, MD and Joachim Schofer, MD, PhD

Background—Meta-analyses of randomized trials have shown an increased risk of periprocedural stroke after carotid artery stenting (CAS) compared with carotid endarterectomy, which may differ in specific patient subgroups. Knowledge of risk factors for cerebral embolic lesions during CAS may impact treatment decisions for the individual patient, but these factors have not been extensively studied. We aimed to identify factors predictive for cerebral ischemic lesions during embolic protected CAS.
