Paul A. Reilly, PhD∗; Thorsten Lehr, PhD†; Sebastian Haertter, PhD†; Stuart J. Connolly, MD§; Salim Yusuf, MD, DPhil§; John W. Eikelboom, MB BS§; Michael D. Ezekowitz, MD, PhD‖; Gerhard Nehmiz, PhD†; Susan Wang, PhD∗; Lars Wallentin, MD, PhD¶

Objectives: The goal of this study was to analyze the impact of dabigatran plasma concentrations, patient demographics, and aspirin (ASA) use on frequencies of ischemic strokes/systemic emboli and major bleeds in atrial fibrillation patients.

NEUROSURGERY. Long-term Follow-up of Blister Aneurysms of the Internal Carotid Artery

Kalani, M. Yashar S. MD, PhD*; Zabramski, Joseph M. MD*; Kim, Louis J. MD‡; Chowdhry, Shakeel A. MD*; Mendes, George A. C. MD*; Nakaji, Peter MD*; McDougall, Cameron G. MD*; Albuquerque, Felipe C. MD*; Spetzler, Robert F. MD*

Background: Blister aneurysms of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are uncommon. There is a paucity of data on the long-term outcomes of patients.

NEUROSURGERY. Results of Stent-Assisted vs Non-Stent-Assisted Endovascular Therapies in 489 Cerebral Aneurysms: Single-Center Experience

Jahshan, Shady MD*,‡; Abla, Adib A. MD*,‡; Natarajan, Sabareesh K. MD, MS*,‡; Drummond, Patrick S. BS§; Kan, Peter MD, MPH*,‡; Karmon, Yuval MD*,‡; Snyder, Kenneth V. MD, PhD*,‡,¶,‖; Hopkins, L. Nelson MD*,‡,¶,‖,**; Siddiqui, Adnan H. MD, PhD*,‡,¶,‖; Levy, Elad I. MD*,‡,¶,‖

Background: Whether the addition of stenting to intracranial aneurysm coil embolization results in benefit in terms of occlusion rates or additional risk in terms of periprocedural adverse events is not clear.

NEUROSURGERY. Transvenous Coil Embolization of an Intraorbital Arteriovenous Fistula: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Williamson, Richard W. MD; Ducruet, Andrew F. MD; Crowley, R. Webster MD; McDougall, Cameron G. MD; Albuquerque, Felipe C. MD

Background and Importance: Purely intraorbital arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), which are rare vascular malformations that clinically mimic carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCFs), involve a fistula from the ophthalmic artery to 1 of the draining ophthalmic veins. We describe a case of an intraorbital AVF treated with transvenous endovascular coil embolization via the inferior petrosal sinus (IPS) route and review the literature on this rare entity.

NEUROSURGERY. Double Arterial Catheterization Technique for Embolization of Brain Arteriovenous Malformations With Onyx

Renieri, Leonardo MD; Consoli, Arturo MD; Scarpini, Giulia MD; Grazzini, Giulia MD; Nappini, Sergio MD; Mangiafico, Salvatore MD

Background: Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) treatment is multidisciplinary, and the patient may undergo embolization, neurosurgery, or radiosurgery combined. Great improvement in endovascular techniques was provided by the introduction of Onyx with different kinds of approach.

NEUROSURGERY. Transfemoral Transarterial Onyx Embolization of Carotid Body Paragangliomas: Technical Considerations, Results, and Strategies for Complication Avoidance

Kalani, M. Yashar S. MD, PhD; Ducruet, Andrew F. MD; Crowley, R. Webster MD; Spetzler, Robert F. MD; McDougall, Cameron G. MD; Albuquerque, Felipe C. MD

Background: The association of carotid body paragangliomas with neurovascular structures can cause cranial nerve injury and significant intraoperative blood loss. Preoperative embolization may be performed either percutaneously or transarterially.

NEUROSURGERY. Resolution of Diminished Olfactory Sensation After Treatment of Bilateral Ophthalmic Segment Aneurysms With Flow Diversion: Case Report

Kelkar, Prashant S. DO*,§; Chaaban, Mohamad R. MD‡; Walters, Beverly C. MD, MSc*,§; Woodworth, Bradford A. MD‡; Deveikis, John P. MD*; Harrigan, Mark R. MD*

Background and Importance: Olfactory tract dysfunction due to an unruptured intracranial aneurysm is rare. We present a case in which a patient with impaired olfaction related to bilateral internal carotid artery aneurysms experienced subjective and quantitative objective improvement of olfactory sensation after treatment of ophthalmic segment aneurysms with flow diversion.

Jeon, Sang-Beom MD, PhD*,‡,§; Parikh, Gunjan MD‡,‖; Choi, H. Alex MD, MS‡,§; Badjatia, Neeraj MD, MS‡,‖; Lee, Kiwon MD‡,§; Schmidt, J. Michael PhD‡; Lantigua, Hector MD‡; Connolly, E. Sander MD¶; Mayer, Stephan A. MD‡; Claassen, Jan MD, PhD‡

Background: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are commonly found after stroke but have not previously been studied in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

Hyemin Seo, Dae Seob Choi, Hwa Seon Shin, Jae Min Cho, Eun Ha Koh and Seungnam Son

OBJECTIVE. Varying anatomic characteristics and clinical and radiologic manifestations are diagnostic challenges in the evaluation of the cerebral vein and of venous sinus diseases. The purpose of this article is to introduce bone subtraction CT venography and review normal variations and diseases involving the cerebral veins and venous sinuses.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Beyond Aneurysms

Carrie P. Marder, Vinod Narla, James R. Fink and Kathleen R. Tozer Fink

OBJECTIVE. Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) typically prompts a search for an underlying ruptured saccular aneurysm, which is the most common nontraumatic cause. Depending on the clinical presentation and pattern of SAH, the differential diagnosis may include a diverse group of causes other than aneurysm rupture.
