SPRINGER. Biodegradable flow-diverting device for the treatment of intracranial aneurysm: short-term results of a rabbit experiment

Kuizhong Wang, Shaoji Yuan, Xuping Zhang, Qiang Liu, Qisheng Zhong, Rongwei Zhang, Peigang Lu, Jiwen Li

Introduction: One main complication of a flow-diverting device (FD) in treating intracranial aneurysm is stenosis of parent artery (PA) or occlusion of side branches. The use of a biodegradable device may satisfy the need for aneurysm occlusion and eliminate potential complications.

SPRINGER. Variations in the origin of the vertebral artery and its level of entry into the transverse foramen diagnosed by CT angiography

Akira Uchino, Naoko Saito, Masahiro Takahashi, Yoshitaka Okada, Eito Kozawa, Naoko Nishi, Waka Mizukoshi, Reiko Nakajima, Yusuke Watanabe

Introduction: The origin of the vertebral artery (VA) varies, though most VAs enter the transverse foramen (TF) of the sixth cervical vertebra. On computed tomography (CT) angiographic images, we evaluated the prevalence of variations of both VA origin and its level of entry into the TF.

JACC. Local Stiffness of the Carotid and Femoral Artery Is Associated With Incident Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality. The Hoorn Study

Thomas T. van Sloten, MD∗; Miranda T. Schram, PhD∗; Katja van den Hurk, PhD§; Jacqueline M. Dekker, PhD§; Giel Nijpels, PhD, MD§; Ronald M.A. Henry, PhD, MD∗; Coen D.A. Stehouwer, PhD, MD∗

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the association of local and segmental arterial stiffness with incident cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.

NEUROSURGERY. Intraoperative Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound for Brain Tumor Surgery

Prada, Francesco MD*; Perin, Alessandro MD, PhD*; Martegani, Alberto MD‡; Aiani, Luca MD‡; Solbiati, Luigi MD§; Lamperti, Massimo MD¶; Casali, Cecilia MD*; Legnani, Federico MD*; Mattei, Luca MD*; Saladino, Andrea MD*; Saini, Marco MD*; DiMeco, Francesco MD*,‡,§,¶,‖

Background: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a dynamic and continuous modality that offers a real-time, direct view of vascularization patterns and tissue resistance for many organs. Thanks to newer ultrasound contrast agents, CEUS has become a well-established, live-imaging technique in many contexts, but it has never been used extensively for brain imaging. The use of intraoperative CEUS (iCEUS) imaging in neurosurgery is limited.

NEUROSURGERY. Treatment of Blister-Like Aneurysms With the Pipeline Embolization Device

Chalouhi, Nohra MD*; Zanaty, Mario MD*; Tjoumakaris, Stavropoula MD*; Gonzalez, L. Fernando MD*; Hasan, David MD‡; Kung, David MD*; Rosenwasser, Robert H. MD*; Jabbour, Pascal MD*

Background: Endovascular vessel reconstruction with the pipeline embolization device (PED) has become common practice. Data on the safety and efficacy of the PED in blister-like aneurysms (BLAs) are limited.

NEUROSURGERY. Safety and Validity of Mechanical Thrombectomy and Thrombolysis on Severe Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis

Li, Guangwen MD*,‡; Zeng, Xianwei MD*,§; Hussain, Mohammed PhD*,‖; Meng, Ran MD‡,¶; Liu, Yi PhD‡; Yuan, Kevin PhD‖; Sikharam, Chaitanya PhD‖; Ding, Yuchuan PhD‖; Ling, Feng MD‡; Ji, Xunming MD, PhD‡

Background: Although the majority of patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) obtain an optimistic clinical outcome after heparin or warfarin treatment, there remains a subgroup of patients who do not respond to conventional anticoagulation treatment. These patients, especially younger people, as documented by hospital-based studies, have a high morbidity and mortality rate.

NEUROSURGERY. Mechanisms of Stroke After Intracranial Angioplasty and Stenting in the SAMMPRIS Trial

Derdeyn, Colin P. MD*; Fiorella, David MD, PhD‡; Lynn, Michael J. MS§; Rumboldt, Zoran MD‖; Cloft, Harry J. MD, PhD¶; Gibson, Daniel MD*; Turan, Tanya N. MD#; Lane, Bethany F. RN§; Janis, L. Scott PhD**; Chimowitz, Marc I. MB, ChB#; for the Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Preventing Recurrent Stroke in Intracranial Stenosis Trial Investigators

Background: Enrollment in the Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for the Prevention of stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) trial was halted owing to higher-than-expected 30-day stroke rates in the stenting arm. Improvement in periprocedural stroke rates from angioplasty and stenting for intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) requires an understanding of the mechanisms of these events.

NEUROSURGERY. The Relationship Between Delayed Infarcts and Angiographic Vasospasm After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Brown, Robert J. MD; Kumar, Abhay MD; Dhar, Rajat MD; Sampson, Tomoko R. MD; Diringer, Michael N. MD

Background: Delayed cerebral ischemia is common after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and is a major contributor to poor outcome. Yet, although generally attributed to arterial vasospasm, neurological deterioration may also occur in the absence of vasospasm.

CATHETERIZATION AND CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. FiberNet—A new embolic protection device for carotid artery stenting

C. Bauer MD, J. Franke MD, S.C. Bertog MD, V. Woerner MD, S. Ghasemzadeh-Asl MD and H. Sievert MD

Background: Though distal filter protection during carotid stenting reduces the risk of cerebrovascular events, periprocedural stroke remains a risk despite their broad usage. This observation may be related to the pore size of common filters. The FiberNet distal filter system is unique by its very small pore size (40 µm) as well as its low profile and flexibility. Little data is available regarding the clinical performance and safety of this device.

Hélène Raoult, MD, Elise Bannier, PhD, Benjamin Robert, PhD, Christian Barillot, PhD, Peter Schmitt, PhD, Jean-Yves Gauvrit, MD, PhD

To assess time-resolved spin-labeled (SL) magnetic resonance (MR) angiographic imaging with a large acquisition time window over two cardiac cycles for characterization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
