STROKE. Brief Report. Hemodynamic Quantification in Brain Arteriovenous Malformations With Time-Resolved Spin-Labeled Magnetic Resonance Angiography

Hélène Raoult, MD; Elise Bannier, PhD; Pierre Maurel, PhD; Clément Neyton, MS; Jean-Christophe Ferré, MD, PhD; Peter Schmitt, PhD; Christian Barillot, PhD; Jean-Yves Gauvrit, MD, PhD

Background and Purpose: Unenhanced time-resolved spin-labeled magnetic resonance angiography enables hemodynamic quantification in arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Our purpose was to identify quantitative parameters that discriminate among different AVM components and to relate hemodynamic patterns with rupture risk.

NEUROSURGERY. Feasibility and Safety of Pipeline Embolization Device in Patients With Ruptured Carotid Blister Aneurysms

Yoon, Jang W. MD, MS*; Siddiqui, Adnan H. MD‡; Dumont, Travis M. MD‡,§; Levy, Elad I. MD‡; Hopkins, L. Nelson MD‡; Lanzino, Giuseppe MD¶; Lopes, Demetrius K. MD‖; Moftakhar, Roham MD‖; Billingsley, Joshua T. MD‖; Welch, Babu G. MD#; Boulos, Alan S. MD**; Yamamoto, Junichi MD, PhD**; Tawk, Rabih G. MD*; Ringer, Andrew J. MD‡‡; Hanel, Ricardo A. MD, PhD*,§§; for the Endovascular Neurosurgery Research Group

Background: Treatment of internal carotid ruptured blister aneurysms (IC-RBA) presents many challenges to neurosurgeons because of the high propensity for rebleeding during intervention. The role of a Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) in the treatment of this challenging aneurysm subtype remains undefined despite theoretical advantages.

NEUROSURGERY. Impact of Indocyanine Green Videoangiography on Rate of Clip Adjustments Following Intraoperative Angiography

Caplan, Justin M. MD*; Sankey, Eric BS*; Yang, Wuyang MD*; Radvany, Martin G. MD*,‡,§; Colby, Geoffrey P. MD, PhD*,‡,§; Coon, Alexander L. MD*,‡,§; Tamargo, Rafael J. MD*,¶; Huang, Judy MD*

Background: Intraoperative angiography (IA) is used to evaluate the adequacy of clip reconstruction of intracranial aneurysms. Alternative imaging such as indocyanine green videoangiography (ICG-VA) has been proposed. The additional benefit of ICG-VA when IA is routinely used has not been previously determined.

STROKE. Clinical Sciences. Coated-Platelets Improve Prediction of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack in Asymptomatic Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis

Angelia C. Kirkpatrick, MD, MPH; Alfonso J. Tafur, MD, MS; Andrea S. Vincent, PhD; George L. Dale, PhD; Calin I. Prodan, MD

Background and Purpose: Coated-platelets, a subset of procoagulant platelets observed on dual agonist stimulation with collagen and thrombin, support a robust prothrombinase activity and provide a unique measure of platelet thrombotic potential. Coated-platelet levels are increased in large artery stroke, and higher levels are associated with early stroke recurrence, suggesting a potential role for risk stratification in asymptomatic patients with carotid artery stenosis.

STROKE. Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound for the Evaluation of Neovascularization in Atherosclerotic Carotid Artery Plaques

Kozue Saito, MD; Kazuyuki Nagatsuka, MD; Hatsue Ishibashi-Ueda, MD; Akihiro Watanabe, MD; Hideaki Kannki, MD; Koji Iihara, MD

Background and Purpose: Neovascularization associated with plaque vulnerability, particularly in the plaque shoulder, is susceptible to rupture, causing ischemic events. We aimed to use contrast-enhanced ultrasound to evaluate neovessels in carotid plaques quantitatively, focusing on plaque shoulders.

STROKE. Clinical Sciences. Number of Cerebral Microbleeds and Risk of Intracerebral Hemorrhage After Intravenous Thrombolysis

Steffen Dannenberg*; Jan F. Scheitz, MD*; Michal Rozanski, MD; Hebun Erdur, MD; Peter Brunecker, Dr rer medic; David J. Werring, PhD; Jochen B. Fiebach, MD; Christian H. Nolte, MD

Background and Purpose: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are found in a substantial proportion of patients with ischemic stroke eligible for treatment with intravenous thrombolysis. Until now, there is limited data on the impact of multiple CMBs on occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) after intravenous thrombolysis.

STROKE. Clinical Sciences. Morphological, Hemodynamic, and Clinical Independent Risk Factors for Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysms

Wojciech Kaspera, MD; Piotr Ładziński, MD, PhD; Patrycja Larysz, MD; Anna Hebda, MS; Krzysztof Ptaszkiewicz, MD; Marek Kopera, MD; Dawid Larysz, MD, PhD

Background and Purpose: The pathogenesis of cerebral aneurysms still raises some controversies. The aim of this study was to identify morphological, hemodynamic, and clinical independent risk factors for anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm development.

STROKE. Clinical Sciences. Flow Diversion Versus Conventional Treatment for Carotid Cavernous Aneurysms

Mario Zanaty, MD; Nohra Chalouhi, MD; Robert M. Starke, MD; Guilherme Barros, BS; Mark Philip Saigh, BA; Eric Winthrop Schwartz, BS; Norman Ajiboye, MD; Stavropoula I. Tjoumakaris, MD; David Hasan, MD; Robert H. Rosenwasser, MD; Pascal Jabbour, MD

Background and Purpose: Several endovascular treatment options are available for cavernous carotid aneurysms. We compared pipeline embolization device (PED) versus conventional endovascular treatment in terms of evolution of mass effect, complications, recurrence, and retreatment rate.

JOURNAL OF VASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Endovascular Procedures versus Intravenous Thrombolysis in Stroke with Tandem Occlusion of the Anterior Circulation

Serdar Tütüncü, MD, Jan F. Scheitz, MD , Georg Bohner, MD , Jochen B. Fiebach, MD , Matthias Endres, MD , Christian H. Nolte, MD

Purpose: Stroke with tandem occlusion within the anterior circulation presents a lower probability of recanalization and good clinical outcome after intravenous (IV) thrombolysis than stroke with single occlusion. The present study describes the impact of endovascular procedures (EPs) compared with IV thrombolysis alone on recanalization and clinical outcome.

STROKE. Clinical Sciences. Activities of Daily Living Is a Critical Factor in Predicting Outcome After Carotid Endarterectomy in Asymptomatic Patients

Anand Dayama, MD; Pratik Pimple, MBBS, MPH; Barath Badrinathan, MD; Richard Lee, MD; James G. Reeves, MD

Background and Purpose: Ability to perform basic daily activity represented by functional status (FNS) before surgery can be assessed in the clinic for determining health status of the patient. We sought to study the effect of FNS on postoperative outcomes after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in a national data set.
