AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Safety of the Pipeline Embolization Device in Treatment of Posterior Circulation Aneurysms

T.J. Phillips, J.D. Wenderoth, C.C. Phatouros, H. Rice, T.P. Singh, L. Devilliers, V. Wycoco, S. Meckel and W. McAuliffe

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The published results of treating internal carotid artery aneurysms with the PED do not necessarily apply to its use in the posterior circulation because disabling brain stem infarcts can be caused by occlusion of a single perforator. In this multicenter study, we assessed the safety of PED placement in the posterior circulation.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Technical Feasibility and Application of Mechanical Thrombectomy with the Solitaire FR Revascularization Device in Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion

P. Mordasini, C. Brekenfeld, J.V. Byrne, U. Fischer, M. Arnold, M.R. Heldner, R. Lüdi, H.P. Mattle, G. Schroth and J. Gralla

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute BAO is a devastating neurological condition associated with a poor clinical outcome and a high mortality rate. Recanalization has been identified as a major prognostic factor for good outcome in BAO. Mechanical thrombectomy using retrievable stents is an emerging treatment option for acute stroke. First clinical trials using stent retrievers have shown promising high recanalization rates. However, these studies mainly included large artery occlusions in the anterior circulation with only a few or single cases of BAO. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate technical feasibility, safety, and efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy using retrievable stent in the treatment of acute BAO.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Much of the long-term disability occurs in patients with Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion (ELVO). In fact, in these patients, occlusion of a major intracerebral artery results in a large area of brain injury often resulting in death or severe disability1. Until recently, intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) was the only proven treatment for ELVO.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Diagnostic Accuracy of Transcranial Doppler for Brain Death Confirmation: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

J.J. Chang, G. Tsivgoulis, A.H. Katsanos, M.D. Malkoff and A.V. Alexandrov

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transcranial Doppler is a useful ancillary test for brain death confirmation because it is safe, noninvasive, and done at the bedside. Transcranial Doppler confirms brain death by evaluating cerebral circulatory arrest. Case series studies have generally reported good correlations between transcranial Doppler confirmation of cerebral circulatory arrest and clinical confirmation of brain death. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utility of transcranial Doppler as an ancillary test in brain death confirmation.
