AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Complications of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Stroke in the SWIFT Trial with Solitaire and Merci Devices

P.T. Akins, A.P. Amar, R.S. Pakbaz and J.D. Fields on behalf of the SWIFT Investigators

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Treatment of patients with ischemic stroke after endovascular treatment requires in-depth knowledge of complications. The goal of this study was to make endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke safer through an in-depth review of the major periprocedural complications observed in the Solitaire FR With Intention for Thrombectomy (SWIFT) trial.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Treatment of Acute Vertebrobasilar Occlusion Using Thrombectomy with Stent Retrievers: Initial Experience with 18 Patients

M. Espinosa de Rueda, G. Parrilla, J. Zamarro, B. García-Villalba, F. Hernández and A. Moreno

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute vertebrobasilar occlusion is an ominous disease with few proved effective treatments. Experience with stent retrievers is scarce and limited to combined therapies (stent retrievers associated with previous intravenous fibrinolysis, intra-arterial thrombolysis, or other mechanical devices). We present our experience with 18 patients treated with direct thrombectomy by using stent retrievers.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Predictors of Functional Outcome after Emergency Carotid Artery Stenting and Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis for Treatment of Acute Stroke Associated with Obstruction of the Proximal Internal Carotid Artery and Tandem Downstream Occlusion

H.S. Kwak, S.B. Hwang, G.Y. Jin, D.S. Hippe and G.H. Chung

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients who develop severe stroke symptoms due to acute internal carotid artery occlusion eventually in combination with a thromboembolic obstruction of the middle cerebral artery incur a major risk of developing extensive MCA infarction with a poor outcome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome for patients with tandem occlusions in the MCA and/or distal ICA, retrospectively, who had undergone stent implantation in the proximal segment of the ICA in addition to intra-arterial thrombolysis.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Efficacy and Safety of Flow Diversion for Paraclinoid Aneurysms: A Matched-Pair Analysis Compared with Standard Endovascular Approaches

G. Lanzino, E. Crobeddu, H.J. Cloft, R. Hanel and D.F. Kallmes

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Flow diversion is a new strategy for the treatment of complex paraclinoid aneurysms. However, flow diverters have, to date, not been tested in direct comparison with other available treatments. We present a matched-pair comparison of paraclinoid aneurysms treated with the PED versus other endovascular techniques.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Last-Recorded P2Y12 Reaction Units Value Is Strongly Associated with Thromboembolic and Hemorrhagic Complications Occurring Up to 6 Months after Treatment in Patients with Cerebral Aneurysms Treated with the Pipeline Embolization Device

J.E. Delgado Almandoz, B.M. Crandall, J.M. Scholz, J.L. Fease, R.E. Anderson, Y. Kadkhodayan and D.E. Tubman

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A recent study identified a preprocedural P2Y12 reaction units value of <60 or >240 as a strong independent predictor of perioperative thromboembolic and hemorrhagic complications after treatment of cerebral aneurysms with the Pipeline Embolization Device. This study aimed to determine whether a last-recorded P2Y12 reaction units value of <60 or >240 predicts thromboembolic and hemorrhagic complications up to 6 months after treatment of cerebral aneurysms with the Pipeline Embolization Device in the same patient cohort.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion: Outcome of Mechanical Thrombectomy with Solitaire Stent within 8 Hours of Stroke Onset

J.M. Baek, W. Yoon, S.K. Kim, M.Y. Jung, M.S. Park, J.T. Kim and H.K. Kang

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mechanical thrombectomy with a stent retriever applied shortly after symptom onset could increase good functional outcomes and improve survival in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion, but this has not yet been studied. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy with a Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke onset in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Resolution of Mass Effect and Compression Symptoms following Endoluminal Flow Diversion for the Treatment of Intracranial Aneurysms

I. Szikora, M. Marosfői, B. Salomváry, Z. Berentei and I. Gubucz

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alleviation of aneurysm induced mass effect has been difficult with both conventional endovascular and surgical techniques. Our aim was to study the efficacy of endovascular flow modification on aneurysm-induced mass effect and compression syndrome, as demonstrated by cross-sectional imaging studies and clinical follow-up.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. A Meta-Analysis of Observational Intra-Arterial Stroke Therapy Studies Using the Merci Device, Penumbra System, and Retrievable Stents

M.A. Almekhlafi, B.K. Menon, E.A. Freiheit, A.M. Demchuk and M. Goyal

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The time from arterial puncture to successful recanalization is an important milestone toward timely recanalization. With the significant improvement in recanalization rates by using thrombectomy devices, procedural time to recanalization is becoming a determinant factor in choosing among available devices. We aimed to assess the impact of time to recanalization on the outcome of intra-arterial stroke therapies.
