CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. A Prospective Randomized Trial of Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis With Additional Balloon Dilatation for Iliofemoral Deep Venous Thrombosis: A Single-Center Experience

Xiaoqin Zhang, Qingshuai Ren, Xuemei Jiang, Jianming Sun, Jianping Gong, Bo Tang, Yikuan Chen

Purpose: Catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) is effective for acute iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis (DVT), but CDT remains partially effective for subacute DVT. The aim of this study was to conduct a prospective randomized controlled single-centre clinical trial to compare CDT alone with CDT with additional balloon dilatation for the treatment of iliofemoral DVT.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Use of Percutaneous Aspiration Thrombectomy vs. Anticoagulation Therapy to Treat Acute Iliofemoral Venous Thrombosis: 1-year Follow-up Results of a Randomised, Clinical Trial

Volkan Cakir, Aytac Gulcu, Emrah Akay, Ahmet E. Capar, Tugra Gencpinar, Banu Kucuk, Ozalp Karabay, A. Yigit Goktay

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of percutaneous aspiration thrombectomy (PAT) followed by standard anticoagulant therapy, with anticoagulation therapy alone, for the treatment of acute proximal lower extremity deep vein thrombosis.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Effectiveness of Sclerotherapy, Surgery, and Laser Therapy in Patients With Venous Malformations: A Systematic Review

Carine J. M. van der Vleuten, Anne Kater, Marc H. W. A. Wijnen, Leo J. Schultze Kool, Maroeska M. Rovers

Purpose: Because the best possible treatment for venous malformations is unclear, this study systematically reviews the available literature regarding the effectiveness of different treatment options for the patient group. Venous malformations result from incorrect development of the veins during embryogenesis and are present at birth. Venous malformations may exhibit symptoms, such as pain, swelling, and inflammation of the vessel.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Hepatocellular Carcinomas within the Milan Criteria: Predictors of Histologic Necrosis after Drug-eluting Beads Transarterial Chemoembolization

Bruno C. Odisio, Francisco Galastri, Rony Avritscher, Breno B. Afonso, Vanderlei Segatelli, Guilherme E. G. Felga, Paolo R. O. Salvalaggio, Joe Ensor, Michael J. Wallace, Felipe Nasser

Purpose: To evaluate pathologic, imaging, and technical predictors of therapy response in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria undergoing doxorubicin drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) before orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT).

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Stereotactic Radiofrequency Ablation for Liver Tumors in Inherited Metabolic Disorders

Daniela Karall, Sabine Scholl-Bürgi, Gerlig Widmann, Ursula Albrecht, Katharina Niedermayr, Kathrin Maurer, Bernd Ausserer, Martina Huemer, Reto Bale

Purpose: Both glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSD Ia) and tyrosinemia type I (TYR I) are inherited metabolic disorders that can be complicated by formation of liver adenomas in juvenile/young adult age and/or development of hepatocellular carcinoma. We describe the first application of stereotactic radiofrequency ablation (SRFA) in focal lesions in three patients with inherited metabolic disorders affecting the liver.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Radiofrequency Ablation After Arterial Injection of Miriplatin–Iodized Oil Suspension Into Swine Liver: Ablative Zone Size and Tissue Platinum Concentration

Takashi Yamanaka, Haruyuki Takaki, Atsuhiro Nakatsuka, Katsunori Uchida, Uraki Junji, Masashi Fujimori, Takaaki Hasegawa, Misao Yoneda, Taizo Shiraishi, Hajime Sakuma, Koichiro Yamakado

Purpose: To evaluate whether arterial injection of miriplatin–iodized oil suspension facilitates ablative zone expansion by radiofrequency (RF) ablation using a Cool-Tip electrode and to provide effective tissue platinum concentration in the normal swine liver.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Efficacy of Magnetic Thermoablation Using SPIO in the Treatment of Osteoid Osteoma in a Bovine Model Compared to Radiofrequency and Microwave Ablation

Peter Isfort, H. Witte, I. Slabu, T. Penzkofer, M. Baumann, T. Braunschweig, L. N. Kennes, C. K. Kuhl, T. Schmitz-Rode, A. H. Mahnken, P. Bruners

Purpose: To evaluate heating efficacy of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) for electromagnetic ablation (EMA) of osteoid osteoma (OO) using an ex vivo model compared to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA).

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY.Temporary Distal Balloon Occlusion for Hepatic Embolization: A Novel Technique to Treat What Cannot be Selected

Michael W. Itagaki

Purpose: Particle embolotherapy for liver cancers, such as chemoembolization and yttrium-90 radioembolization, depends on microcatheter selection of the treatment vessel for injection of the embolic. Individually selecting vessels with a microcatheter can be time-consuming and difficult, especially when multiple branches are present in the treatment zone. This article describes a technique to perform an “inverse” embolization—protection of the selected vessel and embolization of the unselected vessels—a technique that has not yet been described.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Removal of the Antiscatter Grid During Routine Biliary Interventional Procedures Performed in a Flat-Panel Interventional Suite: Preliminary Data on Image Quality and Patient Radiation Exposure

Kelvin Cortis, Roberto Miraglia, Luigi Maruzzelli, Roberta Gerasia, Corrado Tafaro, Angelo Luca

Purpose: To determine whether grid removal during routine biliary interventional procedures performed in a flat-panel interventional suite results in adequate image quality and a significant decrease of patient radiation exposure.
