CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Comparison of Technical and Clinical Outcome of Transjugular Portosystemic Shunt Placement Between a Bare Metal Stent and a PTFE-Stentgraft Device

J. Lauermann, A. Potthoff, M. Mc Cavert, S. Marquardt, B. Vaske, H. Rosenthal, T. von Hahn, F. Wacker, B. C. Meyer, Thomas Rodt

Purpose: To analyse technical and clinical success of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) in patients with portal hypertension and compare a stent and a stentgraft with regard to clinical and technical outcome and associated costs.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. The Introduction of an Undergraduate Interventional Radiology (IR) Curriculum: Impact on Medical Student Knowledge and Interest in IR

M. Shaikh, B. Shaygi, H. Asadi, P. Thanaratnam, K. Pennycooke, M. Mirza, M. Lee

Interventional radiology (IR) plays a vital role in modern medicine, with increasing demand for services, but with a shortage of experienced interventionalists. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of a recently introduced IR curriculum on perception, knowledge, and interest of medical students regarding various aspects of IR.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Systolic Sac Pressure Index for the Prediction of Persistent Type II Endoleak for 12 Months After Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Akira Ikoma, Motoki Nakai, Morio Sato, Hirotatsu Sato, Hiroki Minamiguchi, Tetsuo Sonomura, Yoshiharu Nishimura, Yoshitaka Okamura

Purpose: To assess the relationship between the systolic sac pressure index (SPI) and the presence of endoleaks 12 months after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR).

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Usefulness of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography and Automatic Vessel Detection Software in Emergency Transarterial Embolization

Gianpaolo Carrafiello, Anna Maria Ierardi, Ejona Duka, Alessandro Radaelli, Chiara Floridi, Alessandro Bacuzzi, Maximilian de Bucourt, Giuseppe De Marchi

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the utility of dual phase cone beam computed tomography (DP-CBCT) and automatic vessel detection (AVD) software to guide transarterial embolization (TAE) of angiographically challenging arterial bleedings in emergency settings.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. CT-Guided Superior Vena Cava Puncture: A Solution to Re-Establishing Access in Haemodialysis-Related Central Venous Occlusion Refractory to Conventional Endovascular Techniques

Mohamed Khalifa, Neeral R. Patel, Steven Moser

Purpose: The purpose of this technical note is to demonstrate the novel use of CT-guided superior vena cava (SVC) puncture and subsequent tunnelled haemodialysis (HD) line placement in end-stage renal failure (ESRF) patients with central venous obstruction refractory to conventional percutaneous venoplasty (PTV) and wire transgression, thereby allowing resumption of HD.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Ex Vivo Liver Experiment of Hydrochloric Acid-Infused and Saline-Infused Monopolar Radiofrequency Ablation: Better Outcomes in Temperature, Energy, and Coagulation

Xiong-ying Jiang, Yang-kui Gu, Jin-hua Huang, Fei Gao, Ru-hai Zou, Tian-qi Zhang

Objective: To compare temperature, energy, and coagulation between hydrochloric acid-infused radiofrequency ablation (HAIRFA) and normal saline-infused radiofrequency ablation (NSIRFA) in ex vivo porcine liver model.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Primary Creation of an Externally Constrained TIPS: A Technique to Control Reduction of the Portosystemic Gradient

Khashayar Farsad, Kenneth J. Kolbeck, Frederick S. Keller, Robert E. Barton and John A. Kaufman

OBJECTIVE. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation increases the risk of hepatic encephalopathy due to overshunting. Techniques exist to secondarily reduce the shunt for refractory encephalopathy. The purpose of this article is to describe a technique for primary TIPS restriction using a balloon-expandable stent within the transvenous hepatic track followed by deployment of a self-expanding polytetrafluoroethylene–lined stent-graft within the balloon-expandable stent to create the TIPS.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. A Large Display Is a Powerful Tool to Reduce Radiation Exposure During Single-Plane Fluoroscopically Guided Procedures

Philippe Gailloud

OBJECTIVE. Magnification is a well-known, but often overlooked, factor impacting radiation exposure. Modern angiography units are commonly offered with single large monitors that allow multiple configurations, including wide display setting in addition to standard display setting similar to a classic arrangement of multiple monitors.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Imaging of Cosmetic Plastic Procedures and Implants in the Body and Their Potential Complications

Noushin Yahyavi-Firouz-Abadi, Christine O. Menias, Sanjeev Bhalla, Cary Siegel, Gabriela Gayer and Douglas S. Katz

OBJECTIVE. Cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, as well as implants, are increasingly being performed. These implants are often encountered on routine imaging examinations, and radiologists are often asked to evaluate for complications or evidence of failure. Pectoral augmentation, gluteal augmentation, body lift and abdominoplasty, and penile and testicular prostheses are reviewed in this article.
