AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Quantitative Measurements of Enhancement on Preprocedure Triphasic CT Can Predict Response of Colorectal Liver Metastases to Radioembolization

F. Edward Boas, Lynn A. Brody, Joseph P. Erinjeri, Hooman Yarmohammadi, Waleed Shady, Sirish Kishore and Constantinos T. Sofocleous

OBJECTIVE. Colorectal liver metastases (CLM) have a variable response to radioembolization. This may be due at least partly to differences in tumor arterial perfusion. The present study examines whether quantitative measurements of enhancement on preprocedure triphasic CT can be used to predict the response of CLM to radioembolization.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Surrogate Imaging Biomarkers of Response of Colorectal Liver Metastases After Salvage Radioembolization Using 90Y-Loaded Resin Microspheres

Waleed Shady, Vlasios S. Sotirchos, Richard K. Do, Neeta Pandit-Taskar, Jorge A. Carrasquillo, Mithat Gonen and Constantinos T. Sofocleous

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1, tumor attenuation criteria, Choi criteria, and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) PET criteria as measures of response and subsequent predictors of liver progression-free survival (PFS) after radioembolization (RE) of colorectal liver metastases (CLM). The study also assesses interobserver variability for measuring tumor attenuation using a single 2D ROI on a simple PACS workstation.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Why Is the X-Ray Tube Usually Located Underneath the Patient Instead of Above the Patient for Interventional Fluoroscopic Procedures?

Jaydev K. Dave

Radiation exposure caused by scatter radiation from the patient is more intense on the backscatter (i.e., x-ray tube) side than on the forward scatter (i.e., image receptor) side. Placing the x-ray tube underneath the patient decreases the amount of backscatter radiation to which the radiation-sensitive organs of personnel in the fluoroscopy room are exposed.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Injection Techniques

O. Kenechi Nwawka and Theodore T. Miller

OBJECTIVE. Peripheral nerves are well seen using ultrasound (US) imaging, making US an ideal modality for image-guided nerve injections. This article provides a technical guide for common upper and lower extremity peripheral nerve injections, including the median, ulnar, and radial nerves in the upper extremity and the lateral femoral cutaneous, sciatic, common peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves in the lower extremity.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. CT Appearance of Traumatic Inferior Vena Cava Injury

Richard Tsai, Constantine Raptis, Douglas J. Schuerer and Vincent M. Mellnick

OBJECTIVE. CT plays a crucial role in the evaluation of stable patients with blunt and penetrating trauma in the emergency department. Among the more severe injuries that may occur in penetrating and blunt trauma are those to the inferior vena cava (IVC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate and differentiate the CT findings associated with penetrating versus blunt trauma to the IVC to aid the radiologist in diagnosing IVC injuries.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Radiation Risk to the Fluoroscopy Operator and Staff

Cosette M. Stahl, Quinn C. Meisinger, Michael P. Andre, Thomas B. Kinney and Isabel G. Newton

OBJECTIVE. Recent articles discussing cases of brain cancer in interventionalists have raised concerns regarding the hazards of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. We review the basics of radiation dose and the potential radiation effects, particularly as they pertain to the operator. Then we present the data regarding the risk of each type of radiation effect to the fluoroscopy operator and staff, with special attention on cancer induction, radiation-induced cataracts, and the pregnant operator.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. MRI-Guided Prostate Interventions

Eric M. Walser, Thaddeus F. Sze, Jason R. Ross, Ara A. Karamanian and David A. Woodrum

OBJECTIVE. The objective of this study is to discuss the use of MRI-guided and MRI-directed prostate biopsy techniques, describe how interventional MRI focal therapies are used for the treatment of prostate cancer, and predict future directions in prostate interventional MRI. The prospect of establishing a center for prostate imaging, diagnosis, and treatment is also discussed.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Assessment of Early Treatment Response With DWI After CT-Guided Radiofrequency Ablation of Functioning Adrenal Adenomas

Thiago F. Nunes, Denis Szejnfeld, Jacob Szejnfeld, Claudio E. Kater, Salomão Faintuch, Charlles H. M. Castro and Suzan M. Goldman

OBJECTIVE. The objective of this study was to establish the suitability of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as a parameter for evaluating early treatment response after percutaneous ablation of functional adrenal adenomas.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Transradial Approach for Hepatic Radioembolization: Initial Results and Technique

Vivian L. Bishay, Derek M. Biederman, Thomas J. Ward, Imramsjah Martijn J. van der Bom, Rahul S. Patel, Edward Kim, Francis S. Nowakowski, Robert A. Lookstein and Aaron M. Fischman

OBJECTIVE. The transradial approach (TRA) has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with arterial coronary interventions. Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) performed via the TRA can enhance patient comfort, compared with the traditional transfemoral approach (TFA), by allowing immediate ambulation and precluding potential complications associated with the TFA, such as closure device injury or retroperitoneal hematoma. We report our initial experience with and technique for using the TRA for SIRT.
