JOURNAL OF VASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Safety and Efficacy of Drug-eluting Bead Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Comparison of Small-versus Medium-size Particles

Siddharth A. Padia, MD , Giri Shivaram, MD , Sarah Bastawrous, DO , Puneet Bhargava, MD , Nghia J. Vo, MD , Sandeep Vaidya, MD , Karim Valji, MD , William P. Harris, MD , Daniel S. Hippe, MS , Matthew J. Kogut, MD

Purpose: To compare safety and imaging response with 100–300 μm and 300–500 μm doxorubicin drug-eluting bead (DEBs) to determine optimal particle size for chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Analysis by MRI of Residual Tumor After Radiofrequency Ablation for Early Stage Breast Cancer

Vanessa Sales Vilar, Suzan Menasce Goldman, Marcos Desidério Ricci, Katia Pincerato, Helio Oliveira, Thiago Giansante Abud, Sergio Ajzen, Edmund Chada Baracat and Jacob Szejnfeld

OBJECTIVE. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of MRI in the detection of possible residual lesions after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of breast cancer.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. High-Powered Gas-Cooled Microwave Ablation: Shaft Cooling Creates an Effective Stick Function Without Altering the Ablation Zone

Erica M. Knavel, J. Louis Hinshaw, Meghan G. Lubner, Anita Andreano, Thomas F. Warner, Fred T. Lee, Jr. and Christopher L. Brace

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of our study was to validate the ability of a new gas-cooled microwave device to secure antennas into tissue before ablation via shaft cooling and to verify that such cooling does not compromise the intended ablation.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Applying the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound Recommendations for Fine-Needle Aspiration of Thyroid Nodules: Effect on Workup and Malignancy Detection

Hasan A. Hobbs, Manisha Bahl, Rendon C. Nelson, James D. Eastwood, Ramon M. Esclamado and Jenny K. Hoang

OBJECTIVE. The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) recommendations on thyroid nodules are intended to “diagnose thyroid cancers that have reached clinical significance, while avoiding unnecessary tests and surgery in patients with benign nodules.” The aim of our study was to determine the proportion of thyroid nodules undergoing ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) that do not meet SRU recommendations.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR IMAGING. Utility of Quantitative 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT for 90yttrium-Labelled Microsphere Treatment Planning: Calculating Vascularized Hepatic Volume and Dosimetric Approach

Etienne Garin, Yan Rolland, Laurence Lenoir, Marc Pracht, Habiba Mesbah, Philippe Porée, Sophie Laffont, Bruno Clement, Jean-Luc Raoul, and Eveline Boucher

Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of SPECT/CT for volume measurements and to report a case illustrating the major impact of SPECT/CT in calculating the vascularized liver volume and dosimetry prior to injecting radiolabelled yttrium-90 microspheres (Therasphere). Materials and Methods. This was a phantom study, involving volume measurements carried out by two operators using SPECT and SPECT/CT images. The percentage of error for each method was calculated, and interobserver reproducibility was evaluated. A treatment using Therasphere was planned in a patient with three hepatic arteries, and the quantitative analysis of SPECT/CT for this patient is provided.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE AND MOLECULAR IMAGING. Usefulness and pitfalls of MAA SPECT/CT in identifying digestive extrahepatic uptake when planning liver radioembolization

Laurence Lenoir, Julien Edeline, Yann Rolland, Marc Pracht, Jean-Luc Raoul, Valérie Ardisson, Patrick Bourguet, Bruno Clément, Eveline Boucher, Etienne Garin

Purpose: Identifying gastroduodenal uptake of 99mTc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA), which is associated with an increased risk of ulcer disease, is a crucial part of the therapeutic management of patients undergoing radioembolization for liver tumours. Given this context, the use of MAA single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT may be essential, but the procedure has still not been thoroughly evaluated. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the effectiveness of MAA SPECT/CT in identifying digestive extrahepatic uptake, while determining potential diagnostic pitfalls.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY. Summary of the 2010 AHPBA/SSO/SSAT Consensus Conference on HCC

Gitonga Munene Jean-Nicolas Vauthey and Elijah Dixon

Under the auspices of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, an expert consensus conference was convened in January 2010 on the multidisciplinary management of hepatocellular carcinoma. The goals of the conference were to address knowledge gaps in the optimal preparation of patients with HCC for operative therapy, best methods to control HCC while awaiting liver transplantation, and developing a multidisciplinary approach to these patients with implementation of novel systemic therapies.
