Una nueva investigación a largo plazo sugiere ahora que el uso de dilatadores totalmente biodegradables es seguro para las arterias del corazón. En un informe que aparece en la edición del 16 de abril de la revista Circulation, investigadores japoneses dijeron que un estudio de diez años ha mostrado que el dilatador biodegradable Igaki-Tamai, fabricado con un material basado en la fécula de maíz, se disuelve en la pared arterial, sin dejar material foráneo permanente en una arteria y reduciendo la ocurrencia de un coágulo sanguíneo dentro del dilatador.

Percutaneous endovenous intervention effective for upper extremity deep venous thrombosis

Mohsen Sharifi, adjunct associate professor of Medicine at A T Still University, Mesa, USA, presented new data demonstrating that percutaneous endovenous intervention (PEVI) is an alternative in the treatment of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis at the iCON meeting in Arizona, USA. Previous studies by Sharifi’s group had demonstrated a successful performance with PEVI in lower extremity deep vein thrombosis.

Rivaroxaban shows comparable efficacy to standard of care for pulmonary embolism patients

Results of the EINSTEIN-PE study have shown that the oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban (Xarelto, Janssen and Bayer Healthcare) was comparable to today’s standard of care in treating patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism and in preventing development of venous thromboembolism. The study also found rivaroxaban had a similar safety profile and significantly lower risk of major bleeding versus the current standard regimen. These data were presented as a late breaking clinical trial at the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Sessions, and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

New guidelines on radiation exposure to significantly reduce annual eye dose limits

The new European Directive laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from ionising radiation exposure will come into effect on 6 February 2018. The most relevant change for interventionists in the occupational exposure section is the new annual limit for the lens of the eyes (20 mSv/year, instead of 150 mSv/year), write Eliseo Vano (Madrid, Spain) and Gabriel Bartal (Kfar Saba, Israel).
