CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Coronary Hemodynamics. Thermodilution-Derived Coronary Blood Flow Pattern Immediately After Coronary Intervention as a Predictor of Microcirculatory Damage and Midterm Clinical Outcomes in Patients With ST-Segment–Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Masashi Fukunaga, MD, Kenichi Fujii, MD, Daizo Kawasaki, MD, Hisashi Sawada, MD, Koujiro Miki, MD, Hiroto Tamaru, MD, Takahiro Imanaka, MD, Toshihiro Iwasaku, MD, Tsuyoshi Nakata, MD, Masahiko Shibuya, MD, Hirokuni Akahori, MD, Motomaru Masutani, MD, Kaoru Kobayashi, MD, Mitsumasa Ohyanagi, MD and Tohru Masuyama, MD

Background: Despite a sufficient coronary blood flow after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction; some patients have a poor outcome because of microcirculatory damage. This study evaluates whether the thermodilution-derived coronary blood flow parameters immediately after primary percutaneous coronary intervention predict early microvascular damage and midterm outcomes in patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Coronary Hemodynamics. Intracoronary Stem Cell Infusion After Acute Myocardial Infarction. A Meta-Analysis and Update on Clinical Trials

Renate de Jong, MD, Jaco H. Houtgraaf, MD, Sanaz Samiei, BSc, Eric Boersma, PhD and Henricus J. Duckers, MD, PhD

Background: Several cell-based therapies for adjunctive treatment of acute myocardial infarction have been investigated in multiple clinical trials, but the benefits still remain controversial. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of bone marrow–derived mononuclear cell (BMMNC) therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction, but also explores the effect of newer generations of stem cells.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY. Novel self-expandable, stent-based transcatheter pulmonic valve: A preclinical animal study

Gi Beom Kim1, Hong-Gook Lim1, Yong Jin Kim1, Eun Young Choi1, Bo Sang Kwon1, Saeromi Jeong1

Background: Because transcatheter implantation of pulmonary valve is indicated for limited-size dysfunctional right ventricular outflow tract only as a balloon-expandable stent, we investigated the feasibility of a large-diameter self-expandable valved stent and the durability of the valve after >6 months.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY. Safety and efficacy of degradable vs. permanent polymer drug-eluting stents: A meta-analysis of 18,395 patients from randomized trials

Yuqing Wang1, Shijian Liu1, Yuanlin Luo, Fangjuan Wang, Huanyun Liu, Lufeng Li, Xiaohui Zhao, Lan Huang

Background: Degradable polymer drug-eluting stents (DP-DES) represent a promising strategy to improve the delayed healing and hypersensitive reaction in the vessel. However, the efficacy and safety of DP-DES vs. permanent polymer drug-eluting stents (PP-DES) are less well defined. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the total, short (<30 days), mid (30 days–1 year) and long (>1 year) term outcomes of DP-DES vs. PP-DES.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY. Prevalence and prognostic implication of restenosis or dilatation at the aortic coarctation repair site assessed by cardiovascular MRI in adult patients late after coarctation repair

S.S.M. Chen1, K. Dimopoulos1, R. Alonso-Gonzalez, E. Liodakis, E. Teijeira-Fernandez, M. Alvarez-Barredo, A. Kempny, G. Diller, A. Uebing, D. Shore, L. Swan, P.J. Kilner, M.A. Gatzoulis, R.H. Mohiaddin

Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is ideal for assessing patients with repaired aortic coarctation (CoA). Little is known on the relation between long-term complications of CoA repair as assessed by CMR and clinical outcome. We examined the prevalence of restenosis and dilatation at the repair site and the long-term outcome in patients with repaired CoA.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CARDIOLOGY. Does residual aortic regurgitation after transcatheter aortic valve implantation increase mortality in all patients? The importance of baseline natriuretic peptides

Bogdan Borz1, Eric Durand1, Matthieu Godin1, Christophe Tron1, Alexandre Canville1, Camille Hauville1, Fabrice Bauer1, Alain Cribier1, Hélène Eltchaninoff1

Background: Aortic regurgitation (AR) is an important complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and even moderate AR is associated with increased mortality after TAVI. The association with decreased survival is unclear. We aimed to analyse the impact of AR after TAVI as a function of baseline NT-proBNP.

CIRCULATION. Epidemiology and Prevention. Impact of Incident Venous Thromboembolism on Risk of Arterial Thrombotic Diseases

Caroline Lind, BSc; Linda E. Flinterman, PhD; Kristin F. Enga, MD, PhD; Marianne T. Severinsen, MD, PhD; Søren R. Kristensen, MD, PhD; Sigrid K. Brækkan, PhD; Ellisiv B. Mathiesen, MD, PhD; Inger Njølstad, MD, PhD; Suzanne C. Cannegieter, MD, PhD; Kim Overvad, MD, PhD; John-Bjarne Hansen, MD, PhD

Background: Growing evidence supports an association between venous thromboembolism (VTE) and arterial thrombotic diseases (ie, myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke). We aimed to study the association between VTE and future arterial events and to determine the population attributable risk of arterial events by VTE in a large prospective cohort recruited from the general population.

CIRCULATION. Stroke. National Assessment of Warfarin Anticoagulation Therapy for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation

Jeffrey S. Dlott, MD; Roberta A. George, MS; Xiaohua Huang, MS; Mouneer Odeh, MS; Harvey W. Kaufman, MD; Jack Ansell, MD; Elaine M. Hylek, MD

Background: Anticoagulation control with warfarin, as assessed by the international normalized ratio (INR), is challenging. Time in the therapeutic range has been inversely correlated with major hemorrhage, thrombosis, and mortality. Quest Diagnostics offers standardized INR laboratory testing services to approximately half of US physician practices. To inform national stroke prevention strategies, we evaluated anticoagulation control in office-based community practices.
