CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Coronary Artery Ectasia Are Frequently Observed in Patients With Bicuspid Aortic Valves With and Without Dilatation of the Ascending Aorta

Christine Meindl, Birgit Achatz, Deborah Huber, Andrea Baessler, Ute Hubauer, Christa Meisinger, Christian Hengstenberg, Jeanette Erdmann, Stefan Buchner, Lars Maier, Heribert Schunkert, Kurt Debl, Marcus Fischer

Background: The presence of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is influenced by genetic factors and related to the presence of aneurysms in other vascular beds. Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is frequently accompanied by ascending aortic aneurysm. Because the aortic valve and the proximal parts of the coronary arteries share a common embryonic origin, we hypothesized that CAE is associated with BAV disease.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Five-Year Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients With ST-Segment–Elevation Myocardial Infarction Treated With Bare-Metal Versus Everolimus-Eluting Stents

Josep Gomez-Lara, Salvatore Brugaletta, Francisco Jacobi, Luis Ortega-Paz, Marcos Ñato, Gerard Roura, Rafael Romaguera, Jose-Luis Ferreiro, Luis Teruel, Montserrat Gracida, Victoria Martin-Yuste, Xavier Freixa, Monica Masotti, Joan-Antoni Gomez-Hospital, Manel Sabate, Angel Cequier

Background: The main causes of late (>1 month) stent thrombosis (ST) are stent uncoverage, malapposition, and neoatherosclerosis. First-generation drug-eluting stents were associated with higher rate of late ST compared with bare-metal stents (BMS), especially in patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction. Second-generation everolimus-eluting stents (EES) have shown similar rate of late ST than BMS. The aims of the study are to compare the ratio of uncovered to total struts per cross-section ≥30% and other optical coherence tomographic findings associated with ST between EES and BMS in patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction at 5 years.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Injectable Shear-Thinning Hydrogels for Minimally Invasive Delivery to Infarcted Myocardium to Limit Left Ventricular Remodeling

Christopher B. Rodell, Madonna E. Lee, Hua Wang, Satoshi Takebayashi, Tetsushi Takayama, Tomonori Kawamura, Jeffrey S. Arkles, Neville N. Dusaj, Shauna M. Dorsey, Walter R.T. Witschey, James J. Pilla, Joseph H. Gorman, Jonathan F. Wenk, Jason A. Burdick, Robert C. Gorman

Background: Injectable, acellular biomaterials hold promise to limit left ventricular remodeling and heart failure precipitated by infarction through bulking or stiffening the infarct region. A material with tunable properties (eg, mechanics, degradation) that can be delivered percutaneously has not yet been demonstrated. Catheter-deliverable soft hydrogels with in vivo stiffening to enhance therapeutic efficacy achieve these requirements.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Novel Angiographic Classification of Each Vascular Lesion in Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension Based on Selective Angiogram and Results of Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty

Takashi Kawakami, Aiko Ogawa, Katsumasa Miyaji, Hiroki Mizoguchi, Hiroto Shimokawahara, Takanori Naito, Takashi Oka, Kei Yunoki, Mitsuru Munemasa, Hiromi Matsubara

Background: Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is an alternative therapy for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension who are ineligible for standard therapy, pulmonary endarterectomy. Although there are several classifications of vascular lesions, these classifications are based on the features of the specimen removed during pulmonary endarterectomy. Because organized thrombi are not removed during balloon pulmonary angioplasty, we attempted to establish a new classification of vascular lesions based on pulmonary angiographic images. We evaluated the success and complication rate of BPA in accordance with the location and morphology of thromboembolic lesions.
