Fibroblasts, cells long thought to be boring and irrelevant, could offer an alternative to heart transplants for patients with heart disease.
Is your glass half full or half empty? If you are over the age of 50 and full of optimism, you are likely to be at lower risk of heart failure, according to a new study.
Heart valve defects are a common cause of death in newborns. Scientists at the University of Bonn and the caesar research center have discovered "Creld1" is a key gene for the development of heart valves in mice. The researchers were able to show that a similar Creld1 gene found in humans functions via the same signaling pathway as in the mouse. This discovery is an important step forward in the molecular understanding of the pathogenesis of heart valve defects. The findings have been published in the journal Developmental Cell.
Cardiac transplantation is the treatment of choice for end stage heart failure. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, approximately 3,000 people in the US are on the waiting list for a heart transplant, while only 2,000 donor hearts become available each year. Therefore for the cardiac patients currently waiting for organs, mechanical assist devices are the only options available. These devices, however, are not perfect and have issues with power supplies, infection, and both clotting and hemolysis.
Periodontal disorders such as tooth loss and gingivitis have been identified as a potential risk marker for cardiovascular disease in a large study reported April 9, 2014. More than 15,000 patients with chronic coronary heart disease provided information on their dental health, with results showing that indicators of periodontal disease (fewer remaining teeth, gum bleeding) were common in this patient group and associated with numerous cardiovascular and socioeconomic risk factors.
Findings from a study of nearly 63 000 Norwegians, presented for the first time at EuroHeartCare 2014, show that moderate to severe depression increases the risk of heart failure by 40%.
Poor sleep doubles hospitalisations in heart failure, according to new research in nearly 500 patients presented at EuroHeartCare 2014.
Patients presenting to the emergency department with an undetectable level of the blood biomarker high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T, and whose ECGs show no sign of restricted blood flow, have a minimal risk of heart attack within 30 days, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology´s 63rd Annual Scientific Session.
The initial results of this trial were published a few months ago (Circulation. 2013;128:1495-1503), and showed that patients who received this treatment during emergency transit to hospital had much smaller amounts of dead heart muscle than those randomly assigned to receive no treatment. The new study shows that the proportion of patients with a severely deteriorated heart contractile function is much less (60%) in the group that received metoprolol. Early treatment with metoprolol treatment also significantly reduced the rate of hospital readmission for chronic heart failure, and massively reduced the need to implant a cardioverter-defibrillator.
Medtronic, Inc. has announced that the CoreValve® System showed results superior to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) at one year in the High Risk Study of its CoreValve U.S. Pivotal Trial, which evaluated patients with severe aortic stenosis who are considered high risk for surgery. The data were presented at a late-breaking clinical trial session at the 63rd Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine
Men suffering from sexual dysfunction can be successful at reversing their problem, by focusing on lifestyle factors and not just relying on medication, according to research at the University of Adelaide.
One of many uses for the intra-aortic balloon pump is helping ensure adequate oxygen and blood delivery to a heart struggling to resume beating in the aftermath of coronary bypass surgery, said Dr. Mary Arthur, cardiovascular anesthesiologist at the Medical College of Georgia and Georgia Regents Health System.
Women who ate a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables as young adults were much less likely to have plaque build-up in their arteries 20 years later compared with those who consumed lower amounts of these foods, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology´s 63rd Annual Scientific Session. This new finding reinforces the importance of developing healthy eating habits early in life.
The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has granted a request from Medtronic to postpone the implementation of an injunction that would have prevented the company from selling its CoreValve system in the United States. This means the injunction will only take effect if the appellate court determines the injunction was properly issued.
Abbott has announced that it has completed enrolment of three clinical trials to support approvals of its Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold in the United States, Japan and China. The product, which dissolves over time, will be compared with drug-eluting stents.
