EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. Prognostic role of restenosis in 10 004 patients undergoing routine control angiography after coronary stenting

Salvatore Cassese , Robert A. Byrne , Stephanie Schulz , Petra Hoppman , Johanna Kreutzer , Antonia Feuchtenberger , Tareq Ibrahim , Ilka Ott , Massimiliano Fusaro , Heribert Schunkert , Karl-Ludwig Laugwitz , Adnan Kastrati

Aim: Routine control angiography is a valuable tool with high-sensitivity in detecting restenosis after coronary stenting. However, the prognostic role of restenosis is still controversial. We investigated the impact of restenosis on 4-year mortality in patients undergoing routine control angiography after coronary stenting.

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. Renal denervation: symply trapped by complexity?

Felix Mahfoud , Thomas Felix Lüscher

Seven years after the first patient was treated with the Symplicity Arch catheter by Murray Esler and colleagues in Melbourne, Australia,1 our knowledge about the renal sympathetic nervous system and its modulation by catheter-based renal denervation has significantly evolved.

Leon , Adrian Ma , Joseph Massaro , Laura Mauri , Suzanne Oparil , William W. O´Neill , Manesh R. Patel , Krishna Rocha-Singh , Paul A. Sobotka , Laura Svetkey , Raymond R. Townsend , George L. Bakris

Aims: The SYMPLICITY HTN-3 randomized, blinded, sham-controlled trial confirmed the safety of renal denervation (RDN), but did not meet its primary efficacy endpoint. Prior RDN studies have demonstrated significant and durable reductions in blood pressure. This analysis investigated factors that may help explain these disparate results.

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. The year in cardiology 2014: coronary intervention

Javaid Iqbal , Patrick W. Serruys , Felipe N. Albuquerque , William Wijns

Preamble: Interventional cardiology is a dynamic speciality with on-going innovations to improve the devices and active research to enable practicing evidence-based medicine. This article summarises the main highlights of interventional cardiology research in the year 2014, particularly focusing on myocardial revascularisation for stable angina and acute coronary syndromes, adjunctive pharmacotherapy for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, and clinical trials of coronary stents and bioresorbable scaffolds.

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. The year in cardiology 2014: valvular heart disease

Luc A. Pierard , Alec Vahanian

Preamble: Numerous articles have been published in 2014 regarding valvular heart diseases. Many papers focused on percutaneous interventions: transcatheter aortic valve implantation and percutaneous mitral valve repair. This article presents the most relevant articles published in 2014 in this important clinical setting.

Cury , Gudrun Feuchtner , Yong-Jin Kim , Erica Maffei , Gilbert Raff , Gianluca Pontone , Daniele Andreini , James K. Min

Aim: Prior evidence observed no predictive utility of coronary CT angiography (CCTA) over the coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and the Framingham risk score (FRS), among asymptomatic individuals. Whether the prognostic value of CCTA differs for asymptomatic patients, when stratified by CACS severity, remains unknown.

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. Risk model for estimating the 1-year risk of deferred lesion intervention following deferred revascularization after fractional flow reserve assessment

Aims: Although lesions deferred revascularization following fractional flow reserve (FFR) assessment have a low risk of adverse cardiac events, variability in risk for deferred lesion intervention (DLI) has not been previously evaluated. The aim of this study was to develop a prediction model to estimate 1-year risk of DLI for coronary lesions where revascularization was not performed following FFR assessment.

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. Systemic thrombolytic therapy for acute pulmonary embolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Christophe Marti , Gregor John , Stavros Konstantinides , Christophe Combescure , Olivier Sanchez , Mareike Lankeit , Guy Meyer , Arnaud Perrier

Aim: Thrombolytic therapy induces faster clot dissolution than anticoagulation in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) but is associated with an increased risk of haemorrhage. We reviewed the risks and benefits of thrombolytic therapy in the management of patients with acute PE.
