CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Efficacy and Safety of Catheter-Based Radiofrequency Renal Denervation in Stented Renal Arteries

Felix Mahfoud, MD, Stefan Tunev, DVM, Jennifer Ruwart, BS, Daniel Schulz-Jander, PhD, Bodo Cremers, MD, Dominik Linz, MD, PhD, Thomas Zeller, MD, Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, Krishna Rocha-Singh, MD, Michael Böhm, MD and Robert J. Melder, ScD

Background—In selected patients with hypertension, renal artery (RA) stenting is used to treat significant atherosclerotic stenoses. However, blood pressure often remains uncontrolled after the procedure. Although catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) can reduce blood pressure in certain patients with resistant hypertension, there are no data on the feasibility and safety of RDN in stented RA.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Ultrasound-Assisted Versus Conventional Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis for Acute Iliofemoral Deep Vein Thrombosis

Rolf P. Engelberger, MD, David Spirk, MD, Torsten Willenberg, MD, Adriano Alatri, MD, Dai-Do Do, MD, Iris Baumgartner, MD and Nils Kucher, MD

Background—For patients with acute iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis, it remains unclear whether the addition of intravascular high-frequency, low-power ultrasound energy facilitates the resolution of thrombosis during catheter-directed thrombolysis.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Comparison of Renal Artery, Soft Tissue, and Nerve Damage After Irrigated Versus Nonirrigated Radiofrequency Ablation

Kenichi Sakakura, MD, Elena Ladich, MD, Kristine Fuimaono, BS, Debby Grunewald, MS, Patrick O’Fallon, BS, Anna-Maria Spognardi, BA, Peter Markham, MS, Fumiyuki Otsuka, MD, Kazuyuki Yahagi, MD, Kai Shen, MD, Frank D. Kolodgie, PhD, Michael Joner, MD and Renu Virmani, MD

Background—The long-term efficacy of radiofrequency ablation of renal autonomic nerves has been proven in nonrandomized studies. However, long-term safety of the renal artery (RA) is of concern. The aim of our study was to determine if cooling during radiofrequency ablation preserved the RA while allowing equivalent nerve damage.

CIRCULATION: CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Comparison of Histopathologic Analysis Following Renal Sympathetic Denervation Over Multiple Time Points

Kenichi Sakakura, MD, Stefan Tunev, DVM, Kazuyuki Yahagi, MD, Amanda J. O’Brien, DVM, Elena Ladich, MD, Frank D. Kolodgie, PhD, Robert J. Melder, ScD, Michael Joner, MD and Renu Virmani, MD

Background—The pathology of radiofrequency-derived sympathetic renal denervation has not been studied over time and may provide important understanding of the mechanisms resulting in sustained blood pressure reduction. The purpose of this study was to investigate chronological changes after radiofrequency-renal denervation in the swine model.

Rafael D. Malgor, MD , Fares Alalahdab, MD , Tarig A. Elraiyah, MBBS , Adnan Z. Rizvi, MD , Melanie A. Lane, BA , Larry J. Prokop, MLS , Olivia J. Phung, PharmD , Wigdan Farah, MBBS , Victor M. Montori, MD, MSc , Michael S. Conte, MD , Mohammad Hassan Murad, MD, MPH

Background: Peripheral arterial disease is common and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.

JOURNAL OF VASCULAR SURGERY. Transradial approach for percutaneous intervention of malfunctioning arteriovenous accesses

Linda Le, MD , Ashton Brooks, MBBS , Melissa Donovan, MD , Taylor A. Smith, MD , W. Charles Sternbergh III, MD , Hernan A. Bazan, MD

Objective: Interventions on arteriovenous (AV) access are typically performed with a direct puncture into the fistula. An alternative is the transradial approach (TRA), which offers the advantage of visualizing both the arterial and venous limbs as well as any juxta-anastomotic stenosis, all through one access.

JOURNAL OF VASCULAR SURGERY. A randomized clinical trial of endovenous laser ablation versus conventional surgery for small saphenous varicose veins

Sandip Nandhra, MBBS, MRCS , Joseph El-sheikha, MBBS, MRCS , Daniel Carradice, MBChB, MD, MRCS , Tom Wallace, MBChB, MRCS , Panos Souroullas, MBBS, MRCS , Nehemiah Samuel, MBChB, MD, MRCS , George Smith, MBBS, MD, MRCS , Ian C. Chetter, MBChB, MD, FRCS

Background: This randomized clinical trial compared endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and surgical ligation with attempted stripping in the treatment of small saphenous vein (SSV) insufficiency. The early results demonstrated that EVLA was more likely to eradicate axial reflux and was also associated with a faster recovery, lower periprocedural pain, and fewer sensory complications. The aim of this 2-year follow-up was to establish whether these benefits remained stable over time and whether these improved technical outcomes were associated with less clinical recurrence.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Survival, Efficacy, and Safety of Small Versus Large Doxorubicin Drug-Eluting Beads TACE Chemoembolization in Patients With Unresectable HCC

Hasmukh J. Prajapati, Minzhi Xing, James R. Spivey, Steven I. Hanish, Bassel F. El-Rayes, John S. Kauh, Zhengjia Chen and Hyun S. Kim

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the overall survival, efficacy, and safety of small (100–300 µm) versus large (300–500 and 500–700 µm) doxorubicin drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB TACE) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. ALPHA Glycolytic Vasculogenesis Better Correlates With MRI and CT Imaging Techniques Than the Traditional Oxygen Vasculogenesis Theory

John R. Haaga, Rebecca Haaga, Indravadan Patel, Zachary Love and Joseph Moulter

OBJECTIVE. Traditional vasculogenesis has many contradictions related to treatment and imaging. This occurs because cancer also uses glycolysis, which does not need oxygen or arteries. Glycolytic lactate supports many procancer processes but high levels of it inhibit glycolysis.
