EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Higher quality of life after metal stent placement compared with plastic stent placement for malignant extrahepatic bile duct obstruction: a randomized controlled trial

Walter, Daisy; van Boeckel, Petra G.A.; Groenen, Marcel J.M.; Weusten, Bas L.A.M.; Witteman, Ben J.; Tan, Gi; Brink, Menno A.; Nicolai, Jan; Tan, Adriaan C.; Alderliesten, Joyce; Venneman, Niels G.; Laleman, Wim; Jansen, Jeroen M.; Bodelier, Alexander; Wolters, Frank L.; van der Waaij, Laurens A.; Breumelhof, Ronald; Peters, Frans T.M.; Scheffer, Robbert C.H.; Steyerberg, Ewout W.; May, Anne M.; Leenders, Max; Hirdes, Meike M.C.; Vleggaar, Frank P.; Siersema, Peter D.

Objective: For palliation of extrahepatic bile duct obstruction, self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) are superior to plastic stents in terms of stent patency and occurrence of stent dysfunction. We assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after stent placement to investigate whether this also results in a difference in HRQoL between patients treated with a plastic stent or SEMS.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Coffee consumption and risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Wijarnpreecha, Karn; Thongprayoon, Charat; Ungprasert, Patompong

Background/objectives: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a worldwide public health concern. Coffee might have a protective effect against NAFLD. However, the results of previous reports are conflicting. Therefore, we carried out this meta-analysis to summarize all available data.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Multiple biopsy passes and the risk of complications of percutaneous liver biopsy

Chi, Heng; Hansen, Bettina E.; Tang, Wing Yin; Schouten, Jeoffrey N.L.; Sprengers, Dave; Taimr, Pavel; Janssen, Harry L.A.; de Knegt, Robert J.

Background and aim: To minimize the sample variability of liver biopsy, the tissue length should be at least 25 mm. Consequently, more than one biopsy pass is needed with cutting biopsy needles. We aimed to investigate the risk factors of biopsy-related complication, including the number of biopsy passes.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Efficacy and safety of sorafenib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: age is not a problem

Ziogas, Dimitrios C.; Papadatos-Pastos, Dionysios; Thillai, Kiruthikah; Korantzis, Ippokratis; Chowdhury, Ruhe; Suddle, Abid; O’Grady, John; Al-Khadimi, Gillian; Allen, Natalie; Heaton, Nigel; Ross, Paul J.; Sarker, Debashis

Objective: Sorafenib is the standard of care for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but data on its use in the elderly are inconclusive.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Sonazoid-enhanced ultrasonography guidance improves the quality of pathological diagnosis in the biopsy of focal hepatic lesions

Eso, Yuji; Takai, Atsushi; Takeda, Haruhiko; Matsumoto, Tomonori; Lee, Minami; Inuzuka, Tadashi; Takahashi, Ken; Ueda, Yoshihide; Marusawa, Hiroyuki; Seno, Hiroshi

Background/aim: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (US) has improved the detection and characterization of focal hepatic lesions. Recently, the importance of obtaining high-quality samples in the biopsy of hepatic lesions has been increasing not only in the field of pathological diagnosis but also in molecular analysis for predicting the effectiveness of anticancer agents and molecular targeted drugs. We evaluated the utility of Sonazoid-enhanced ultrasonography (SEUS) in guiding percutaneous biopsy of focal hepatic lesions by comparing the results of histopathological diagnosis between B-mode US and SEUS guidance.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY & HEPATOLOGY. Clinical, histological, and molecular risk factors for cancer recurrence in patients with stage II colon cancer

Touchefeu, Yann; Provost-Dewitte, Marie; Lecomte, Thierry; Morel, Alain; Valo, Isabelle; Mosnier, Jean-François; Bossard, Céline; Eugène, Juliette; Duchalais, Emilie; Chetritt, Jérôme; Guyetant, Serge; Bézieau, Stéphane; Senellart, Hélène; Caulet, Morgane; Cauchin, Estelle; Matysiak-Budnik, Tamara

Introduction: The assessment of risk factors of cancer recurrence in patients with stage II colon cancer (CC) is crucial. Our aim was to study the clinical, histological, and molecular features associated with 3-year disease-free survival in a series of consecutive patients with stage II CC treated in three regional digestive oncology centers.

JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY. Real-time US-CT/MR fusion imaging for percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma

Su Joa Ahn, Jeong Min Lee, Dong Ho Lee, Sang Min Lee, Jung-Hwan Yoon, Yoon Jun Kim, Jeong-Hoon Lee, Su Jong Yu, Joon Koo Han

Background: Although ultrasonography (US) guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a commonly used treatment option for early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), inconspicuous tumors on US limits its feasibility. Thus, we prospectively determined whether real-time US-CT/MR fusion imaging can improve the technical feasibility of RFA compared with B-mode US, and help predict local tumor progression after RFA in patients with HCC.

JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY. Comparison of no-touch multi-bipolar vs. monopolar radiofrequency ablation for small HCC

Arnaud Hocquelet, Christophe Aubé, Agnès Rode, Victoire Cartier, Olivier Sutter, Anne Frederique Manichon, Jérome Boursier, Gisèle N’kontchou, Philippe Merle, Jean-Frédéric Blanc, Hervé Trillaud, Olivier Seror

Background: The primary aim of this study was to compare the rate of global radiofrequency ablation (RFA) failure between monopolar RFA (MonoRFA) vs. no-touch multi-bipolar RFA (NTmbpRFA) for small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ⩽5 cm in cirrhotic patients.

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY. Preoperative Pulmonary Nodule Localization: A Comparison of Methylene Blue and Hookwire Techniques

Mark Kleedehn, David H. Kim, Fred T. Lee, Jr., Meghan G. Lubner, Jessica B. Robbins, Timothy J. Ziemlewicz and J. Louis Hinshaw

OBJECTIVE. Small pulmonary nodules are often difficult to identify during thoracoscopic resection, and preoperative CT-guided localization performed using either hookwire placement or methylene blue injection can be helpful. The purpose of this study is to compare the localization success and complication rates of these two techniques.

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively evaluate local tumor control, time to tumor progression, and survival rates among patients with lung metastatic colorectal cancer who have undergone ablation therapy performed using laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), or microwave ablation (MWA).
