CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Protective Capnothorax During Transthoracic Needle Biopsy

John Kavanagh, Miranda L. Siemienowicz, Stephen Lyen, Sonja Kandel, Patrik Rogalla

Purpose: Transthoracic needle biopsy (TTNB) is an established procedure in the management of pulmonary nodules. The most common complications are directly related to crossing the lung or visceral pleura during the biopsy. In this study, we describe the use of carbon dioxide instead of room air to create a protective “capnothorax” during TTNB.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. The Results of Ultrasonography-Guided Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation in Hyperparathyroid Patients in Whom Surgery Is Not Feasible

Ismail Cem Sormaz, Arzu Poyanli, Sami Açar, Ahmet Yalin IscanIiker Ozgur, Fatih Tunca, Yasemin Giles Senyürek

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of ultrasonography (US)-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in hyperparathyroid patients who refused surgery or had high surgical risks.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Chitosan–Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate Hydrogel: Characterization and Preclinical Evaluation of a Novel Sclerosing Embolizing Agent for the Treatment of Endoleaks

Fatemeh Zehtabi, Vincent Dumont-Mackay, Ahmed Fatimi, Antony Bertrand-Grenier, Hélène Héon, Gilles Soulez, Sophie Lerouge

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of an embolization agent with sclerosing properties (made of chitosan and sodium tetradecyl sulfate, CH–STS) with a similar embolization agent but without sclerosing properties (made of chitosan, CH) in treating endoleaks in a canine endovascular aneurysm repair model.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Radiofrequency Ablation Combined with Hepatic Arterial Chemoembolization Using Degradable Starch Microsphere Mixed with Mitomycin C for the Treatment of Liver Metastasis from Colorectal Cancer: A Prospective Multicenter Study

Koichiro Yamakado, Yasutaka Inaba, Yozo Sato, Taku Yasumoto, Sadao Hayashi, Takashi Yamanaka, Koji Nobata, Haruyuki Takaki, Atsuhiro Nakatsuka

Purpose: This phase II prospective study investigates possible benefits of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with hepatic arterial chemoembolization using degradable starch microsphere (DSM) mixed with mitomycin C (MMC) in non-surgical candidates with colorectal liver metastases.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. New Alcohol and Onyx Mixture for Embolization: Feasibility and Proof of Concept in Both In Vitro and In Vivo Models

Mohammad Saeed Kilani, Fatemeh Zehtabi, Sophie Lerouge, Gilles Soulez, Jean Michel Bartoli, Vincent Vidal, Mohammad F. Badran

Onyx and ethanol are well-known embolic and sclerotic agents that are frequently used in embolization. These agents present advantages and disadvantages regarding visibility, injection control and penetration depth. Mixing both products might yield a new product with different characteristics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the injectability, radiopacity, and mechanical and occlusive properties of different mixtures of Onyx 18 and ethanol in vitro and in vivo (in a swine model).

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Bariatric Arterial Embolization with Non-spherical Polyvinyl Alcohol Particles for Ghrelin Suppression in a Swine Model

Jae Min Kim, Man-Deuk Kim, Kichang Han, Lailatul Muqmiroh, Seung Up Kim, Gyoung Min Kim, Joonho Kwon, Sung Il Park, Jong Yun Won, Do Yun Lee

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of bariatric arterial embolization (BAE) with non-spherical polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles on systemic ghrelin levels, weight change, and gastric ulceration risk in a swine model.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Ipsilateral Dual-Site, Same-Sitting Percutaneous Lung Biopsy: A Feasibility Study

Joseph Barnett, Aniket N. Tavare, Sajid Khan, Ashish Saini, Dean D. Creer, Samanjit S. Hare

Purpose: Patients with thoracic malignancies often have more than one site of pulmonary, nodal or pleural disease within one hemithorax. In addition, large heterogeneous lesions may comprise distinct, mixed pathological entities. Histological analysis of these lesions can alter tumour staging and treatment options. We investigated the feasibility, safety and benefit of performing image-guided percutaneous lung biopsy (PLB) of two lesions in the same hemithorax at a single sitting.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. Development of a Searchable Database of Cryoablation Simulations for Use in Treatment Planning

F. Edward Boas, Govindarajan Srimathveeravalli, Jeremy C. Durack, Elena A. Kaye, Joseph P. Erinjeri, Etay Ziv, Majid Maybody, Hooman Yarmohammadi, Stephen B. Solomon

Purpose: To create and validate a planning tool for multiple-probe cryoablation, using simulations of ice ball size and shape for various ablation probe configurations, ablation times, and types of tissue ablated.

CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY. A New CT-Guided Modified Trocar Technique for Drainage of Difficult Locations Abscesses

Chiang J. Tyng, Maurício K. Amoedo, Yves Bohrer, Almir G. V. Bitencourt, Paula N. V. Barbosa, Maria Fernanda A. Almeida, Charles E. Zurstrassen, Felipe J. F. Coimbra, Wilson L. da Costa, Jr.Rubens Chojniak

Purpose: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to guide drainage of deep-seated abdominal fluid collections. However, in some cases, these collections seem to be inaccessible due to surrounding organs or their being in difficult locations. The aim of this study is to describe a modified Trocar technique to drain collections in difficult locations, especially those in the subphrenic space, without passing through intervening organs.
