Acceptable six-month safety and patency with Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold below the knee

Ramon Varcoe, Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and colleagues published the clinical and imaging outcomes obtained when they investigated a new bioresorbable vascular scaffold (Absorb, Abbott Vascular) for the treatment of focal tibial and distal popliteal lesions in the Journal of Endovascular Therapy (JEVT) in April 2015. They subsequently presented their first experience with the everolimus-eluting, bioresorbable scaffold for use in peripheral arteries below the knee at EUROPCR in Paris, France. The study was also published in EuroIntervention.

Silk Road Medical announces first US commercial case with the Enroute transcarotid stent system

The first US commercial case using Silk Road Medical’s Enroute transcarotid stent system has been successfully performed at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, by vascular surgeon Peter A Schneider. The Enroute transcarotid stent is designed specifically for transcarotid artery revascularisation (TCAR), combining the surgical principles of neuroprotection with minimally invasive endovascular techniques to treat blockages in the carotid artery at risk of causing a stroke.

Penumbra leverages its direct European commercialisation team to launch CGuard distributed by Penumbra.

Zilver Vena self-expanding venous stent preliminary European results announced

Gerard O’Sullivan announced preliminary results from a European study of venous stents at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) 2015 meeting (26–30 September, Lisbon, Portugal). O’Sullivan is the principal investigator of the VIVO-EU study at the University Hospital Galway, Ireland.

Wearable exercise tracker improves intermittent claudication symptoms at six months

The use of a wearable exercise tracker can improve walking distance and quality of life in patients suffering from intermittent claudication at six months, a study has shown. Results of the randomised wSTEP (Wearable sensor technology efficacy in peripheral vascular disease) trial were presented at the British Society of Endovascular Therapy Annual Meeting (BSET; 2–3 July, Walton Hall, UK).

Preserving pelvic artery perfusion should be a goal during EVAR

Early experience with a device that allows the preservation of the hypogastric artery during endovascular treatment of iliac artery aneurysms shows that the endograft is safe and effective, with a high success rate and patency of over 90% at six months. Results with the new Iliac Branch Excluder were presented at the Vascular Annual Meeting (17–20 June, Chicago, USA).

Multimodality imaging study first to use PET-CT in peripheral arterial disease

A new study shows that positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) can be performed in peripheral arteries “with strong reliability”, according to the investigators. They say also that their results may provide early evidence of possible links between calcification and inflammatory processes occurring within the lower limb arterial tree.
