Intra-arterial stem cell therapy “an emerging modality” for stroke patients

3D MRI shows early signs of stroke risk in diabetic patients

People with diabetes may be harbouring advanced vascular disease that could increase their risk of stroke, according to new research being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). The findings suggest that arterial imaging with 3D MRI could be useful in helping to determine stroke risk among diabetics.

Endovascular revolution in the aorta: 25 years of a landmark case

On 7 September 1990, a 70-year-old man with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and severe back pain caused by a 6cm abdominal aortic aneurysm underwent the first successful endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in the Western world. The case by Juan C Parodi and Julio Palmaz became the first widely known endovascular repair of the aorta and was described the following year in the Annals of Vascular Surgery. On the 25th anniversary of that landmark case, we dedicate these pages to some of the EVAR pioneers.

Endologix and TriVascular announce merger

Endologix and TriVascular announced on 26 October that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Endologix and TriVascular will combine in a stock and cash transaction. The transaction is valued at US$9.10 per TriVascular share, or a total of approximately US$211 million, based on Endologix’s closing stock price of US$13.81 per share on 23 October 2015.

New potential radiopaque materials for radioembolization presented

Bob Abraham, ABK Biomedical, Halifax, Canada, presented computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of novel radiopaque yttrium-strontium-gallium–silicate oxide glass microspheres at CIRSE. These beads, called Occlu90Y, are potential materials for radioembolization.
