CATHETERIZATION & CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Prevalence and impact of preoperative moderate/severe tricuspid regurgitation on patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement

Marco Barbanti MD, Ronald K. Binder MD, Danny Dvir MD, John Tan MD, Melanie Freeman MBBS, Christopher R. Thompson MD, Anson Cheung MD, David A. Wood MD, Jonathon Leipsic MD andJohn G. Webb MD*

Objectives: Significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a marker for late-stage myocardial and valvular heart disease. Whether preoperative TR affects clinical outcomes of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has never been investigated. This study sought to identify the impact of moderate and severe TR on outcomes after TAVR.

CATHETERIZATION & CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Differences determined by optical coherence tomography volumetric analysis in non-culprit lesion morphology and inflammation in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and stable angina pectoris patients

Micheli Zanotti Galon MD1,*, Zhao Wang PhD2, Hiram G. Bezerra MD, PhD3, Pedro Alves Lemos MD, PhD1, Audrey Schnell PhD3, David L. Wilson PhD2, Andrew M. Rollins PhD2, Marco A. Costa MD, PhD3,† andGuilherme F. Attizzani MD3,4,†

Background: While the current methodology for determining fibrous cap (FC) thickness of lipid plaques is based on manual measurements of arbitrary points, which could lead to high variability and decreased accuracy, it ignores the three-dimensional (3-D) morphology of coronary artery disease.

CATHETERIZATION & CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS. Rationale and study design of the RESERVOIR trial: A randomized trial comparing reservoir-based polymer-free amphilimus-eluting stents versus everolimus-eluting stents with durable polymer in patients with diabetes mellitus

R. Romaguera MD1,*, S. Brugaletta MD, PhD2, J. Gomez-Lara MD, PhD1, E. Pinar MD3, P. Jiménez-Quevedo MD4, M. Gracida MD1, G. Roura MD1, J.L. Ferreiro MD1, L. Teruel MD1, J.A. Gómez-Hospital MD, PhD1, E. Montanya MD5, F. Alfonso MD6, M. Valgimigli MD7, M. Sabate MD, PhD2 andA. Cequier MD, PhD1

Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) remain at high risk for stent restenosis and adverse cardiovascular events in the drug-eluting stent era. The amphilimus-eluting stent (AES) is a third generation reservoir-based polymer-free drug-eluting stent that has shown promising preliminary results in patients with DM. It has been suggested that the formulation of the drug with fatty acids could not only modulate the drug release in a timely manner but also achieve convenient levels of drug concentration in diabetic cardiac cells. The aim of this trial is to assess the efficacy of the AES in patients with DM compared with the cobalt chromium everolimus-eluting stent with non-erodible polymer (EES).

EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL. Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale in patients with cryptogenic embolism: a network meta-analysis

Stefan Stortecky , Bruno R. da Costa , Heinrich P. Mattle , John Carroll , Marius Hornung , Horst Sievert , Sven Trelle , Stephan Windecker , Bernhard Meier , Peter Jüni

Background: Up to 40% of ischaemic strokes are cryptogenic. A strong association between cryptogenic stroke and the prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) suggests paradoxical embolism via PFO as a potential cause. Randomized trials failed to demonstrate superiority of PFO closure over medical therapy.

AMERICAN HEART JOURNAL. Impact of drug-eluting stents on the comparative effectiveness of coronary artery bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention

Mark A. Hlatky, MD, Derek B. Boothroyd, PhD, Laurence C. Baker, PhD, Alan S. Go, MD

Background: Drug-eluting stents (DES) have largely replaced bare-metal stents (BMS) for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is uncertain, however, whether introduction of DES had a significant impact on the comparative effectiveness of PCI versus coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) for death and myocardial infarction (MI).
